The Trevose Horticultural Society invites you to explore the treasures of Italy at their 102nd National Garden Club Standard Flower Show "La Dolce Vita." This flower show is open Friday, August 22 from 4 to 8 pm and Saturday, August 23 from 10 am to 4:30 pm at St. Ephrem Catholic Church, 5400 Hulmeville Rd. in Bensalem. The public is cordially invited; admission is free. Non-members are welcome to enter.
In the Design Division, Italy’s rich history is creatively featured in a pedestal design, “The Leaning Tower of Pisa,” noted for its unusual four-degree lean. “Frutta Italia” highlights the colorful bounty of Italy in a still life class interpreting a variety of fruits or vegetables. Designers may recreate a casual outdoor Alfresco style functional table setting for two in “When in Rome.” Noted for its five idyllic towns, “Cinque Terre,” inspires the entrant in a creative design class. A Pavé style design reflects the rich colors of Italy’s unique and colorful “Murano Glass” in a class for novices only. “Venetian Carnival” is an artistic crafts class decorating a mask with natural materials.
The horticulture schedule offers a variety of competitive classes for area green-thumbs, including annuals, perennials, houseplants, evergreen and flowering branches as well as herbs and vegetables. The "Annual Introductions" classes must include recently marketed varieties of flowers and vegetables offered in 2025. Members enter their specimens grown from seed in special challenge classes of sunflower, basil and tomato. Entrants may also compete in sections for foliage and flowering container-grown plants, including a themed dish garden, a horticulture collection, and patio planters.
In the NGC Youth and Sponsored Groups Division children aged 18 and under may compete in the Junior Horticulture Section which includes classes for vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Both youth and senior groups from the Bensalem Senior Center will compete in their respective classes in the Sponsored Groups Division creating a floral themed art work using a variety of colored pasta.
Several informative displays will focus on broadening the public’s environmental awareness.
Coordinated by Karen Woodson of Feasterville, an informative exhibit, “Bel Paese” meaning Beautiful Country, embraces the food, flowers and fruits of Italy, including several of Italy’s more noted cities and regions.
Tomatoes are a significant part of Italian cuisine and culture. An educational exhibit “You Say Tomayto, I Say Tomahto!” designed by Karen Wychock of Warrington, describes the history of the tomato in Italy and highlights varieties that are best suited for Italy’s climate.
A selection of homemade goodies and market tables laden with fresh home-grown flowers and produce, hand-made novelties, garden-related items, and potted plants are always a popular stop for visitors.
