Why fresh water matters for birds at the end of summer

Posted

As summer begins to wind down, many backyard bird enthusiasts focus on keeping feeders full. But did you know that providing fresh water can be even more important than offering food this time of year?

Late summer is one of the busiest seasons for birds. Many are raising their final broods, while young birds are learning to forage on their own. At the same time, adults are beginning their annual molt, replacing worn feathers with fresh new ones. Growing healthy feathers requires energy, and keeping those feathers clean is essential for insulation and flight. A reliable source of fresh water allows birds to bathe, preen and stay in peak condition.

Hot temperatures and dry weather can also leave natural water sources scarce. Bird baths, shallow dishes, drippers and small fountains provide safe places for birds to drink and cool off. Moving water is especially attractive because it catches birds' attention and stays fresher longer.

To keep birds healthy, clean your bird bath every few days and refill it with fresh water daily. A shallow basin with gently sloping sides is ideal, and placing it near shrubs or trees offers birds a quick escape from predators.

At Wild Birds Unlimited, we believe that creating a bird-friendly habitat goes beyond feeding. By offering fresh, clean water throughout late summer and into every season, you're providing one of nature's most valuable resources. Your backyard becomes a welcoming oasis where birds can thrive, and you'll enjoy the rewarding sights and sounds of happy, healthy visitors every day.
